Finally started work on hand-drawn Valentine’s Day cards – the political scene has kept me out of the “mood.” 😦 Stay tuned for more – also planning cards celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love!
I’ve also been doing cartoons for internet radio outlet Boss Boss Radio (bossbossradio.com) – they’ve got honest-to-God “live” DJs pickin’ and playin’ the tunes and they even take requests over the phones (and online)! I did caricatures (not my strong suit! 🙂 ) of all the “Boss Jocks” for the holiday header on their website as seen below . The coloring and layout was by head boss jock John Van Camp:
I’ve also been doing gtaphics for segments the Boss Jocks do on their shows. For example, Big Mike Cowan who does late nights/morning (depending on what part of the country you live in) has several regular segments featuring “Stupid Joke of the Day,” “Stupid Criminals of the Day,” and “Impossible Trivia”:
There’s several other irons in the fire with this group – they’re a great bunch and all the shows are great! And of course, my wife and I love the music from the 60s and 70s (they’re even starting to mix in some 80s classics). Rock on, Boss Jocks!
Here are some of the holiday coffee sleeves I did for La Bou Carmichael, my local java joint. If you’re in the Carmichael area, stop by and ask your barista for one! These cover Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, and “Talk Like a Pirate Day”! I got the idea from fellow cartoonist and Facebook “friend” Jon Murakami, who’s been doing this with his cartooning friends at their local Starbucks in Honolulu. If you make it to Hawaii, stop in at their Honolulu Starbucks – tell them I sent you!
Worked on this holiday header for Boss Boss Radio – I did the drawings; Bossmeister John Van Camp did the layout and coloring. It’s currently up on their website (bossbossradio.com) and Facebook page. #DAbstonCartoons
I sent out (to previously-promised friends) or sold most of the cards I’ve been working on recently – been restocking my “inventory” this week (by drawing more!). Below are some pics of what’s currently available – stop by La Bou Carmichael this weekend if you’d like to pick up one or more – just $5 each. Such a deal!
My local java joint, La Bou Carmichael, is a real art center! I’ve been hanging out there since we moved to Carmichael, so much so I call it my “office”. And I’m not the only artist there! Barista Megan designs cards for all occasions and has been doing so for several years – she calls her “company” Anchor Cards, and she now has a collection for sale at La Bou’s front counter – just $5 each.
My lovely wife Evelyn is drawing and painting coffee sleeves for La Bou and everyone loves them. Just ask for one when you order your drink!
Local classical guitarist Sean O’Connor plays La Bou every Saturday from 11 am ’til 1 pm. He’s also the director of the Sacramento Guitar Society Orchestra.
I’m working on hand-drawn holiday cards – and have even sold a few!
If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by, say hi, and enjoy the great coffee and tea drinks and the yummy pastries – all baked on premise! Say hi to Lee, the manager, too – she’s great and occasionally does some origami!
Below is a pic of nearly all the cards I’ve done for the holidays so far – though I’ve added a few more since I took the picture! When someone buys a card, I redraw it, so this is basically the “base”. I started this because I had promised some people back in the spring that I would do cards for them. Then I waited ’til the week before Thanksgiving to start drawing them! After people at my java joint (La Bou in Carmichael) expressed an interest, I started selling them. It’s keeping me busy! 🙂
Been getting a lot of interest in my hand-drawn cards and have sold a few at my local coffee place, La Bou Carmichael. Here are a few more I’ve done in the past couple of days – I’m trying to build up my “inventory” because there are several people I promised I’d do these for last spring and now it’s almost That Time! 🙂
